Stony Brook PET Core

Overview of Services

The Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Research Core, directed by Professor Ramin Parsey,  facilitates biomedical research at Stony Brook University by assisting researchers in the use of PET and related technologies. It is composed of four core laboratories:

FERM: The Facility for Experimental Radiopharmaceutical Manufacturing is dedicated to the development and production of cGMP grade 18F radiopharmaceuticals to support preclinical and clinical PET imaging at Stony Brook University. The facility is a comprehensive core for the synthesis and characterization of PET radiopharmaceuticals. We have fully trained staff and validated equipment for the synthesis of cGMP 18F radiolabeled pharmaceuticals. FERM (and PERL) are directed by Peter Smith-Jones, PhD, a radiochemist with more than 20 years of radiopharmaceutical research and development experience.

PET/mri: The Siemens Biograph mMR, was installed in July 2013. This scanner consists of a MR-compatible PET detectors inserted into the bore of a 3T magnet, allowing simultaneous acquisition of MRI and list-mode PET data. Currently, this scanner is one of very few in use worldwide.  The unique mMR architecture provides optimal PET performance, eliminating magnetic field interference and minimizing attenuation of the PET signals.  The department has already designed the sequences (including DSI, pCASL, and spectroscopy, similar to above) to be used in this scanner.

PERL: The PET ex vivo Radiometabolite Laboratory (PERL) is a facility of the Stony Brook University PET Research Core. It is dedicated to the ex vivo analysis of blood and other tissue samples to support preclinical and clinical PET imaging at Stony Brook University. Services provided include baseline and post-injection blood chemistry; assay of whole blood, serum or plasma radioactivity; and ex vivo analysis of radiopharmaceuticals and their metabolites in both blood and tissue samples. Additional equipment in the PET/mri imaging suite includes a Swisstrace Twilite arterial blood inline coincidence detector and a Harvard infusion pump.

CUBIT: The Center for Understanding Biology using Imaging Technology is directed by Christine DeLorenzo, PhD, who holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and has 10+ years experience in medical imaging analysis. CUBIT is a team of image analysts, programmers and engineers, focused on extracting the most accurate quantitative information from medical images. We will assist with imaging studies for any discipline (e.g. neurology, cardiology, radiology) or target (e.g. brain, heart, lung, liver) in humans, baboons or rodents.
